The Landfill Working Group of Western Australia was established in 2004 under the auspices of the Waste Management Association of Australia. Its primary function at that time was consideration of landfill waste management issues. The working group consisted of 6 members and has grown in membership to 15

| Mission Statement |
|
The Landfill Working Group of Western Australia’s considers its mission is to deliver improvements to the landfill sector of waste management in Western Australia.

| Objectives |

Technical
- To inform and influence policy on issues and areas relating to the landfill sector of waste management.
- To pursue and investigate new and existing technologies.
- To understand developments in technologies and its relevance or impacts locally.
People and Skills
- To facilitate skills development for landfill operators.
Profile
- To promote and inform relevant government departments, industry and the community about the characteristics, work, waste issues faced and solutions provided by the landfill sector.
Membership and Participation
- To build and maintain good relationships within the landfill sector, and with relevant government departments, the broader waste management industry and the community.
- To facilitate establishment of resources that can be easily accessed by the landfill sector eg. research and development opportunities.
- To establish projects through which the landfill sector can access information and view facilities / activities ‘in action’.
Communication and Knowledge
- To extend the waste management knowledge base.
- To provide appropriate knowledge, advice and information to the landfill sector.
- To further establish and continue to foster the whole of the waste management industry.

Technical
- Recognition as ‘peak body’ to approach by policy makers when investigating and making decisions in terms of technology use and decisions that may impact the landfill sector.
- Facilitation of a strategic approach to funding and implementation of technology.
- Build up of awareness, function, costs and operational capabilities of new and existing technologies.
- Understanding and maximisation of the benefits of technologically for the local landfill sector.
People and Skills
- Improvement in landfill operators’ skills by:
- setting standards by which landfills are operated;
- establishing competency standards; and
- encouraging participation in the industry
Profile
- Greater understanding of work undertaken by landfill sector and approach to solving waste management issues by relevant government departments.
- Greater understating of services provided by the landfill sector by the community.
- Increased understanding of difficulties faced in introducing additional services by relevant government departments, industry and community.
Membership and Participation
- Increase the membership.
- Greater involvement gained by rural and smaller landfills.
- Dissemination of information, knowledge and undertake projects for the benefits of all landfill sector including rural and smaller operated landfills.
Communication and Knowledge
- To build up a resource knowledge base readily accessible by all members via WMAA website.
- To be contacted by relevant government agencies and industry on matters related to waste and landfill management.
- Increased work with other sectors of waste management especially those that permeate the landfill sector.

| Meetings |
|
The Landfill Working Group meets on the third Monday of every month or as determined at a prior meeting.

| Reporting |
|
The Landfill Working Group Chairman reports to the National Division committee.
