The Victorian Energy from Waste Working Group has been established under the auspices of the Waste Management Association of Australia’s national Energy from Waste Division. The purpose and vision of the national Energy from Waste (EfW) Division has been stated as follows:

Purpose: to establish and maintain a viable EfW industry that operates within the framework of ecologically sustainable development.

Vision: for a sustainable Australia with our systems, facilities and infrastructure working to avoid and minimise waste, recover valuable resources and energy and close the loop on urban resource consumption.

The major focus for the Division since its inception has been the development of a Sustainability Guide for Energy from Waste projects in addition to a complementary Industry Code of Practice for Energy from Waste proponents and practitioners. Together they provide the EfW industry with a widely accepted protocol, process and strategic framework for assessing EfW projects and proposals.

The intent of the Victorian EfW Working Group is to establish a local network that can contribute to the development of a sustainable energy from waste sector in Victoria. The group recognises the contribution of greenhouse emissions from the waste sector to global warming, and believes that EfW has a role to play in reducing the effects of climate change.

The objectives of the EfW Working Group are to:

  • facilitate sharing of information on EfW among its members
  • provide support for appropriate and sustainable EfW initiatives in Victoria
  • contribute to the development and promotion of an understanding of EfW issues within the waste profession and the wider Victorian community.
