Humus Management – Adding Value with Compost
Speakers: Angela Luebke & Urs Hildebrandt

Angela Luebke and world renowned compost consultant, Urs Hildebrandt from CMC Consulting Group in Austria will present a one day course for Compost NSW focusing on the importance of humus, how it is measured and how to interpret the results.

Angela and Urs are experts in Controlled Microbial Composting (CMC) and humus management. CMC (commonly known as 'Luebke compost') is a premium-grade, well-humified compost that has been microbially inoculated, aerated and monitored to ensure high standards of quality. The CMC method was developed through on-farm and laboratory research by Siegfried and Uta Luebke of Austria.

'Humus management' is a soil management system the Luebkes use in conjunction with CMC compost. Humus management is an older concept in organic agriculture. Many of the early books on organic farming talked about 'humus farming'. Essentially, humus management is a system of biological farming practices (crop rotations, cover cropping, green manuring, composting, grazing, and proper tillage) which provide food and shelter for soil organisms. The humus management system employed by the Luebkes relies on forage and covercrop based rotations, green manures, proper tillage operations, rock dusts, microbial inoculants, and CMC compost to build soil humus and meet fertility and pest control needs.

An increasing number of farmers are thinking about compost in terms of its ability to build humus and improve the biology of their soil. Many composters and farmers believe that compost adds most of its value through these mechanisms. Angela and Urs will explain its importance, how it is measured and how to interpret the results.
