High tea was served as Val Southam (WMAA), Pam Allan (Phoslock Water Services), Anne Prince (APC Environmental Management) and Jane Castle (Total Environment Centre) shared their experiences and lessons learned in the waste industry with the audience. Registrations and raffles held on the day raised $650 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Future Trends in Waste Management Brekkie Catch-Up (August 2009)

Dr Isa Yunusa (UTS) presented on recent studies relating to land application of ash and other industrial products. Tony Khoury (Waste Contractors and Recyclers Association) and Jeff Angel (Total Environment Centre) debated the pros and cons of Container Deposit Legislation from an industry and community perspective. Hazel Rowley (UNSW) presented on a life cycle perspective of waste management.

Henry Gundry (Woodlawn Operations and Environmental Manager) provided expert commentary on the range of operations undertaken at the Woodlawn Bioreactor, including current and future challenges faced at the Site. The tour received exclusive access and insight into the mine void and operations area; landfill gas extraction; leachate extraction and reinjection; tipping operations; power generation plant; aquaculture applications, hydroponics greenhouse processes and onsite mine tailing areas to be rehabilitated.

High tea was served as Veena Sahajwalla (UNSW), Debbie Romp (Transpacific Industries) and Daniela Santucci (Bankstown Council) shared their thoughts, knowledge and experiences in the waste industry. Registrations and raffles raised approximately $600 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Dr Patricia Chamberlain (C4ES) and Lee Sellick (AECOM) discussed comparisons between Australian and European settings for creating energy from waste. Attendees at this seminar learnt what exists in Australia, future directions for our energy from waste sector and how this compared to the European setting.

Alex Young (Dept of Environment and Climate Change), Oliver Bradshaw (Bankstown Council) and Alvin Piadasa (TES-AMM) presented on the existing and future directions of electronic waste.

| Site Tour of Blaxland WMF and Earthpower (November 2008) |
|
Sally Thompson (Waste & Resources Engineer) of Blue Mountains City Council provided a guided tour of Blaxland Waste Management Facility during the construction of a new landfill cell, including unique design features and installation of landfill lining activities. David Clarke (Site Manager) from Veolia Environmental Services gave an insightful tour of the processes involved at Earthpower to generate green-energy from food waste and production of nutrient rich fertiliser by-product.

This workshop gave waste/resource young professionals greater confidence and strategies in working with their community and stakeholders. Topics covered in the workshop provided participants with the skills needed to plan, conduct and manage stakeholder/community consultation programs, engagement initiatives and social marketing.

Mike Ritchie (SITA Environmental Solutions) provided a lively account of his experiences to date and shared his viewpoints on the status and the future of the industry. Eve Graham (Waverly Council), as winner of the 2007 Conference Scholarship competition, shared her experiences of attending a waste conference in New Zealand.

| The Facility Supervisor lead a walk through the majority of operating areas at the SITA – CEC Environmental Solutions facility and discussed operating challenges, benefits and process improvements since facility commencement. Tamburlaine Wines owner, Mark Davidson, led a tour and discussed how and why Tamburlaine was one of the first wineries in Australia to adopt an environmental management system and manage its vineyards to Australian Certified Organic standards. |

| A tour of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) facility highlighted the range of activities undertaken and the challenges involved in successfully operating a nuclear research and development facility. |

| A tour of O-I Glass, Penrith (an affiliate of Owens Illinois Inc) and Tooheys NSW, Lidcombe (a Lion Nathan brand) demonstrated how sustainability considerations can be integrated into the daily running of commercial beer manufacture and glass packaging operations. |
