Background
The process of forming the NSW Waste Educators Working Group began in 1998 after a very successful Waste Educate conference held in Sydney. At that time, waste educators felt that the time was right to formally start the process of raising the awareness of education and its value in changing behaviour and raising awareness, within the wider waste management industry. At the Waste Educate conference in 1999, the CEO of the WMAA, Val Southam, made an offer to 'host' the process of forming a national waste education body through the WMAA. The NSW group has had a quite lengthy process of formation, starting with a loose group meeting in late 2001, to the development of a Discussion Paper, a series of discussion meetings and finally the election of a formal committee and representation on the National Division.

The group has developed a vision, set of goals and objectives and an action plan. It has links with other WMAA Working Groups and external education groups such as the NSW Waste Educators Network as well as the other state based working groups.

Vision
To be the peak professional waste education group within NSW offering guidance to WMAA members with an education exposure, and advising waste industry stakeholders on education best practice.

Goals
To connect waste educators and share information and experiences,
To identify best practice in waste education and work towards achieving it,
To ensure the continuity of, and consistency in messages (for waste educators, industry and communities),
To raise the profile of education and its role in waste minimisation and management (across education stakeholders, industry and the broader community), and
To unite waste educators in NSW and share our knowledge and resources with the National Waste Educators Division.

Who are we?
The Waste Educators Working Group is a group of educators working within the waste and environmental management industry who share a common goal of advancing waste education within this industry. The members come from local government, consultancies, waste contractors, educational institutions, state government and regional and metropolitan areas. Membership is on a voluntary basis and all members are invited to take part in WEWG activities. Members must have membership of the WMAA (individual or corporate) to participate.

The WEWG is a part of the WMAA National Education Division, with other groups from Victoria, Queensland and South Australia.

How to join?
Participating in the WEWG
The Waste Education Working Group meets on the first Monday of every second month. Members are invited to attend any or all meetings and participate in the discussion and decision making process. The WEWG welcomes (and is looking for) new members to assist in making the WEWG relevant to the needs of as many waste educators as possible and to help build links between educators and others working in the waste industry.

When you come to your first meeting, let someone know so that we can add your name to the list of members and welcome you by introducing you to everyone.
