Energy from Waste Sustainability Guide
Energy from Waste (EfW) is often perceived to be no more than poorly disguised incineration and a technology that both destroys resources and creates pollution. However EfW can present a viable solution for recovering resources that would otherwise be lost to conventional landfill, while at the same time reducing the use of fossil fuels for our energy sources.

The EfW Division of the Waste Management Association of Australia responded to the need to develop a framework for reaching consensus on this issue by developing two industry support documents.

1.      A Sustainability Guide for EfW Projects; and
2.      An Energy from Waste (EfW) Industry Code of Practice.

The key focus of the project was to engage in widespread stakeholder consultation in the development of these documents. This was seen as necessary to ensure that widespread support and endorsement was achieved.

A Working Group had responsibility for the overall direction the Energy from Waste Sustainability Project. Working Group members oversaw the preparation and redrafting of documentation on the basis of stakeholder input.

The Working Group was made of the following
  • Mark Glover (Chair) - Renewed Fuels P/L
  • Ron Wainberg (Treasurer) (B.E.S.T. P/L) - NSW Branch WMAA
  • Matthew Warnken (Project Manager) - Warnken ISE P/L
  • Jeff Angel - Total Environment Centre
  • Stephen Schuck - Bioenergy Australia
  • Tony Wright - Wright Corporate Strategy P/L
  • Neil Chapman - Resource NSW
  • Graeme Jessup - SEDA
  • Raymond Kidd - Environment Australia
  • Jenny Pickles - EcoRecycle Victoria
  • David Moy (TechSearch Waste and Env. Ser.) - QLD Branch WMAA
  • Fraser Bell (Finlaysons) - SA Branch WMAA

  • Lillias Bovell (WA Dept. of Env. Protection) - WA Branch WMAA
  • Yolande Stone (Observer) - Planning NSW

Project Participation - Stakeholder Workshops
The first stage of the Energy from Waste Sustainability Project was a national series of workshops designed to give all stakeholders the opportunity to present their views on the sustainability of recovering Energy from Waste.

The outcomes of these workshops were used to assist the development of the Sustainability Guide for EfW in Australia. To access the workshop notes from these sessions please click on the city name of the relevant session below. Please click here to access the overall summary report on the Stakeholder Workshops.

Afternoon Workshops
Smaller invitational workshops were also run in the afternoon after seven of the morning stakeholder workshops. The purpose of these sessions was twofold; firstly to determine whether the draft Project Scoping Principles (PSP) developed by the Working Group addressed the issues raised during the morning workshop; and secondly, to discuss issues around the development of an Industry Code of Practice (CoP) for EfW.
