Compost Supply Chain Roadmap - Summary Update May 2007
Summarised here are the strategies and actions proposed in the Compost Supply Chain Roadmap document. Revisiting the strategies and actions allows an assessment of Compost Australia’s progress in implementing the Compost Supply Chain Roadmap.
1) Industry to Influence
a) Build a strong association (peak body) with good governance and communications systems
b) Develop a business plan / funding model to sustain the association
c) Develop and implement a marketing plan for Compost Australia and
for compost products
i) Link compost to water efficiency, carbon based agriculture and soil
health improvements
ii) Link compost with local environmental awareness activities
2) Market Development
a) Develop a ‘fit-for-purpose’ label (brand) to address end-user needs and differentiate products
i) Redefine compost as a value added product rather than part of the
waste stream
ii) Promote quality assurance as vital to certification and marketing
b) Support the brand with an appropriate standard, product certification scheme and auditing system
c) Coordinate R&D with product development, the product standard and a product certification scheme – make product information widely available
3) Education and Research
a) Communicate and educate within the sector and to external stakeholders (the rest of the supply chain)
i) Develop education toolkits based on accumulated RO research and
distribute to members
ii) Develop public education programs to increase awareness of
composting and compost use (and address contamination issues)
iii) Use Landcare and other outreach programs as mechanisms to
communicate with and educate stakeholders
iv) Undertake product and technology demonstrations and use action
learning techniques
b) Address key operational impediments to the industry including odour and contamination
i) Implement industry training package
ii) Share learning from various state and local approaches
c) Coordinate research and development activities
i) Annual R&D Forum and summary report
ii) Develop a National R&D Plan
iii) Industry E-news (ROU)
iv) RO Library (ROU)
