Compost Australia conducts an annual National Processors Survey in conjunction with the relevant Government agencies in each state, including:
- Office of Environment and Heritage (New South Wales)
- Department of Environment and Conservation (Western Australia)
- Sustainability Victoria
- Zero Waste South Australia
- Department of Environment & Resource Management (Queensland)
The annual industry survey provides aggregated processing quantity and product market data, and informs current priorities for the sector in each state, and nationally.
Governments and the Recycled Organics Industry are committed to increasing organics diversion from landfill. In order to manage an increase in organic resource recovery, it is necessary to benchmark and monitor the:
- Amount of organic material processed
- Type and quantity of recycled organic products being sold
- The adoption of product standards and
- Barriers/issues restricting the growth of the Industry
Monitoring the industry allows both Compost Australia and governments to understand whether industry development projects (and resource recovery initiatives), are making a difference. By collecting data comparable between states it is possible to learn from industry development activities in other states and put together programs that work more efficiently and effectively at a national level. Federal government support also depends on presenting a national picture of the Industry.
It is widely accepted that the National Processors Survey provides data that is crucial both to the industry and to the management of organic wastes in Australia.
Members of the Recycled Organics Industry in the five mainland states and the ACT, with the financial support of their respective state and territory governments, contribute detailed information about their composting operations through the National Processor Survey. The resulting survey data, aggregated by state and on a national basis, is made publicly available through this website. The Survey is intended to be undertaken annually during August and September for the previous financial year.
