Some definitions of Leadership: Promoting new directions; doing what’s right not just what’s expected or required; influencing others to achieve a goal; inspiring trust and cooperation.
Some definitions of Innovation: the introduction of something new; an action that endows resources with a new capacity to create wealth; the embodiment, combination, or synthesis of knowledge in original, relevant, valued new products, processes or services.

The Compost Leadership Awards are presented annually to recognise leadership and innovation within the recycled organics industry. The awards are judged by a cross-section of government and industry experts.
The categories for the awards are:
- Leadership in the recycled organics industry (Major Award)
recognising leadership by an organisation or individual in the wider recycled organics industry (including local government, consultants and researchers)
- Most improved contamination management in source separated organics
recognising organisations that have actively reduced contamination at the source thus improving the efficiency of organic recycling and the quality of composted products
- Leadership in compost community education
recognising leadership by an organisation or individual who educates the community about the benefits of composting and value of compost.
- Most innovative recycled organics product design (for a specific application)
recognizing innovation in the design of recycled organic (compost) products for specific markets and applications.
The awards are for activities undertaken in the 2010 calendar year. Both self nomination or third party nominations are accepted.
