Membership and Industry Survey

A recent membership and industry survey conducted by Corporate Communication on behalf of the Tasmanian branch has now been completed and will be ready for distribution in the near future.

Titled Consultation on Waste Management Issues in Tasmania the report analyses the responses to the survey which will be used to assist strategic direction for future branch activities and operations.

The survey attracted a significant participation from across a broad industry representation and the report has provided valuable information on topical issues affecting waste management in Tasmania.

Congratulations to Mr Darren Lowe, Tasmanian Manager of VisyBoard, who has won the IPod prize. Thanks to all for their support and participation in the project.

Waste Management in Tasmania 2006

In 2004 a Tasmanian Government Joint Standing Committee on Environment, Resources and Development advertised terms of reference, calling for papers from the private and public sector to address domestic, industrial and hazardous (controlled) waste management in Tasmania.

Following a meeting of WMAA (TAS) a forum was called for all members to attend, including reps from State and Local Government, waste management operators, companies involved in all segments of the market and community members, resulting in a draft response being prepared for the inquiry.

The draft document was forwarded to all members for comment and ratification, allowing for any additional material members requested to be included into the submission, including copies of the minutes, white board notes and emails.

A subsequent meeting of members was held on Friday 5 November to finalise the submission. The Association focussed on looking at solutions for documented issues in the Tasmanian Regulatory and business market place, which will deliver sustainable economic and environmental outcomes, particularly new job growth.

The debate was vigorous and generally informed, resulting in two resignations- one individual and one Council only. The process has continued with all interested parties called to present to the Inquiry. The Inquiry is yet to announce any outcomes.

Living Environment Program

The Tasmanian State Government announced the Living Environment Program as a measure to create a focus on urban or brown environments where the vast majority of Tasmanians live.

The program examines issues such as hazardous waste at home and work, stormwater pollution, water sensitive urban design, noise pollution, litter reduction, cleaner production and resource recovery, sustainable eco-efficient industries and grants for environmental support groups. The Association is excited by the opportunities encompassed within this program.

Waste Management Information Sessions

The Tasmanian Government, in consultation with all stakeholders, has conducted forums focussing upon Tasmania 's strong economic outlook looking at past, present and future waste management particularly it's infrastructural, regulatory and management requirements. The outcomes of the forums have yet to be announced.

Tasmanian Branch Business & Strategic Plan

The branch presently has a documented business and strategic plan meeting National Office requirements recognising the need for clear and documented operating standards for responsible executive, committee and division branch meetings.

The document acts as an induction and reference document for the committee and provides information on all WMAA policies operating procedures and position responsibilities coupled to State and National Strategic direction

The Tasmanian branch is continuing to grow and meet the broader public and private interests of the Industry.

The Tasmanian branch has continued reaching out and has been working with, or in contact with, numerous organisations not directly involved in day to day management of waste, including Tasmania Together, Sustainability Tasmania and Surf rider Foundation to name but a few.
