In 2004 the John Guice Award recipient was Cheryl Batagol, for - among many other things - her contribution in developing Competency Standards for the Waste Management Industry on a national basis.

Cheryl Batagol is currently the Chair of Melbourne Water. She has 30 years experience in the waste management industry, including commercial, industrial and trade waste management and treatment. Cheryl's knowledge and interests in waste management and treatment is reflected in her appointment to the board of EcoRecycle Victoria from 1996 until 2005, serving as Chairperson of EcoRecycle Victoria from 2003 - 2005.

Cheryl has recently been appointed as Deputy Chair of Sustainability Victoria.

Cheryl's other directorships and advisory roles have included Director City West Water, Southern Rural Water, EPA Victoria, the Co-operative Research Centre for Pollution Control and Waste Management, and Vic Track Spotswood Community Forum, and she was a member of the Commonwealth Games Advisory Committee (Environment).

Cheryl's experience in water and waste management bring a holistic approach to the sustainable management of Victoria's natural resources. She has a strong personal and professional commitment to stakeholder and community engagement as the basis for achieving effective change.
