Dr Brian Robinson was Chairman of the Victorian Environment Protection Authority from 1986 until 2005. His major aim wasto develop practical policies for achieving sustainable use of the environment.

As EPA Chairman Dr Robinson transformed the organisation from a traditional regulator to a partner with business and the community, focussed on achieving solid environmental improvements. He oversaw the development of innovative environment protection policies and practices in Victoria over the decade and made a major contribution to national environmental policy development.

Dr Robinson saw cleaner production and best practice environmental management as the key to preventing many environmental problems. He drove adoption of the State industrial waste management policy on waste minimisation, established the Australia Centre for Cleaner Production and brokers partnerships with industry to encourage business to aim for zero waste.

Dr Robinson was responsible for development of Australia's first effective regulatory framework for management of contaminated sites and development of the State environment protection policy for groundwater. He played a lead role in the development of National Packaging Covenant and sustainable approaches to resource recovery and recycling.

Invited to participate in the first workshop on the management of hazardous wastes in developing countries sponsored by ISWA and ENEP in Hawaii in 1987 and to advise UNIDO on environmental issues in Eastern European countries in 1990. Participated by invitation in the first UNEP high-level cleaner production seminar in UK in 1990 and subsequent seminars that focused heavily on developing country issues. Initiated and chaired the first Asia Pacific regional conference on cleaner production in 1991 and co-chaired the first informal Asia Pacific regional roundtable on cleaner production. He was a member of ISWA.

Dr Robinson was a member of various national, State, professional and academic committees related to the environment. He was a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and a member of the Australian Academy of Science National Environment Committee.
