In perpetual recognition of the outstanding contribution and efforts of the late John Guice to promote and develop the Association, it was decided to inaugurate a showcase biennial award which would be presented to a person or persons nominated by the Branches and who is considered to have made an outstanding contribution to the development of the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Industry in Australia over a sustained period of time.
This prestigious award has had five winners in its history:
| 1998 | Bert van den Broek |
| 2000 | Dr Brian Robinson |
| 2002 | Frank Schmidt |
| 2004 | Cheryl Batagol |
| 2006 | Dr Ron Wainberg |
| 2008 | Johannes Biala |
The late John Guice was the National Sales and Marketing Manager of Sulo MGB Pty Ltd at the time of his death in August 1995. John became National Secretary of the Association in 1994 and on taking office had established important personal objectives to assist the Association grow. His first priority was to strengthen the membership base and accordingly, was instrumental as Convenor in arranging the inaugural meeting of the Victorian Branch. John played a similar role in the push to establish a Branch in Queensland.
John considered two major issues that would enable him to achieve his objectives:
- raising the profile of the Association
- providing further benefits to members
John identified a shortage of courses capable of providing individuals with the required industry knowledge. He also recognised a need for these individuals to have an opportunity for input into the design of such courses and the material delivered. John had a strong and committed view for the Association to become a key role player in accreditation.
John worked tirelessly to ensure that the Association was recognised as a catalyst to unite all the disparate factions within the environmental industries, championing the national portfolio planning system which provided a planning structure for national activities.
His contribution to the New South Wales Branch was well respected.
As a contributor, John delivered many papers at Technical Sessions and hosted and chaired a SWOT Analysis Session for the Association prior to his death.
In his tribute to John Guice, Bert van den Broek spoke of "his professionalism, the wide ranging respect he had earned from the industry and his commitment to sound waste management and the environment. He was always bright and eager to get on with the job. John was considerate, hardworking and a well-mannered gentleman. An active and committed WMAA executive member who was very generous with his time"
We are indeed fortunate to have benefited enormously from John's contribution and it is fitting that he be recognised in perpetuity for his outstanding efforts.
